Cultural and Memetic Worth of The Durban International Film Festival

The Durban International Film Festival is seen through many lenses.
As many lenses as there are peoples, the Festival holds different places in individuals’ existences. Personally, the Festival has been the only place for me to watch anime, and to meet people who watch these movies. Each year, I meet the same people, and we say the same things. ‘We always meet here don’t we?’, ‘We should really meet more often’ and ‘Wouldn’t it be a great idea if….’. It’s a breeding ground for ideas and creative projects. It’s a common meeting place where similar minded individuals gather to share a common interest. This stretches across all genres of showcased movies.

The real worth of the D.I.F.F. exists in bringing people together. The cross-section of people that attend through the Festival is stunning, considering that Durban, at present, does not have a venue or event that allows this to happen.

Within this classified ‘worth’ exist two spheres, related yet separate, each integral to the continued evolution of Durban as a cultural and creative center point.
